Side of Stress, Please...

They say we have to conserve energy. Hah!  I suck at that. As a consequence, I crash at unexpected times. Yesterday was a typical example. I had a very stressful day without realizing it until the end of the day. I've been in the hospital since December 21st, it's now January 8th, and I am technically stable. Therefore, it's past time to find a new home. OMG!  I've been through the wringer with regard to a well-rated skilled nursing facility. As a matter of fact, I was discharged to that SNF from this very hospital a year ago almost to the day. I chose it based upon a rating, it's location (the other option was Shoreline, far from my home), and it's marketing brochure touting fine dining (not), and a picturesque lake location. This well-rated skilled nursing facility was decorated for my grandmother or her mother. I was placed in a dark, dingy, private room overlooking a graffiti-emblazoned fence on a rundown home. Epic! I work my whole life, argue with a frug...

First Wheelchair Outing - ABATE Swap Meet

The sun broke through as we wound down back country roads of rural western Washington.  Called my 87-year old uncle to catch up on the past month as my husband drove us (in the Subaru) to the Abate Swap Meet in Monroe, Washington.  Two birds...one stone.  I got to learn all about his seven children and bunches of grandchildren.  All of whom I've never met, including my uncle.  Another blessing of my ALS diagnosis...I guess people want to meet me before it's too late. This was my first public motorcycle event since my diagnosis.  I figured that I'd be in too much emotional pain over not being able to ride a motorcycle anymore.  Fortunately, it wasn't so bad.  We had an agenda, I'm selling my 2006 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe and I had flyers to deliver as well as family and friends to socialize with.  My brother and sister-in-law are very active in the motorcycle community and we have mutual friends.  This was also my first outing u...

On a Baby Knitting Kick

A young member of our extended family is going to be a father shortly. We (my husband and I) only learned this as of late. Realizing that this young couple are very young and not exactly flush with cash, we are setting out to provide them with a few items to welcome the new baby. Clothing, some purchased and a few handknits for a baby boy, ought to be well received. So far I've managed to knit a couple of baby blankets (one using the "dishcloth" pattern) and to design and knit a hat for a newborn. I like the idea of stripes rather than the typical solid baby blue for boys . I hope to knit a few more items in the near future a couple of sizes larger. We aren't looking to compete with Grandma and Grandpa, just want to do our part to welcome a new life to the family. We hope this will help...

Potted Plant Sleeve

2 76 77 What can I say? Apparently a designer lurks within my heart. Every once in awhile I get an overwhelming urge to make something without following a pattern. The yarn just screams to be worked into a specific shape for a specific purpose. I was sitting there minding my own business, contentedly following someone else's pattern when the feeling could not be ignored a moment longer. I dropped my knitting WIP (work-in-progress) and picked up my crochet hook and a wad of leftover yarn that my mother had given me then rooted through my own stash of leftovers to come up with this soothing combination that goes very well in my own living room. Since I liked it, I thought I should write up the pattern. No sense squandering divine inspiration by hoarding it all to myself. The pattern follows: Potted Plant Sleeve By Tina Flink Sleeve Using base color. Ch 50, join with sl st in first ch. Round 1: Chain 3 (this is the first dc), dc all around, adding one dc into bot...
